The Directorate of Communication Satellite has advocated for increased budgetary allocation and capacity building for staff at the maiden edition of the Defence Space Administration monthly Lecture series held at the Gen Irabor Hall on 29th January, 2026.
The Director of Communications Satellite, Maj Gen H Yanet in his opening remarks highlighted the need for Communication on the Move (COTM) technologies in modern warfare and for seamless communication flow which translates to successes in military operations while also highlighting the role of DCS in enhancing capability of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Director added that the Directorate plays a vital role in providing and maintaining secured, fast, and reliable communication to defence formations via satellite, managing strategic satellite communications networks, and maintaining V-Sat facilities, noting that security is no longer a luxury but necessity.

Mr Daniel Abimbola Jekennu presented a comprehensive paper on “Communication on the Move Technologies for Enhanced Military Operations in Nigeria: the Role of DCS”. During his presentation, Mr Jekennu covered COTM’s overview, components, applications, and the Directorate’s efforts which include strategic partnership with local and international operators as well as capacity building for sustainable COTM development.
He also discussed limitations and offered recommendations such as engaging commercial partnerships and capacity building to mitigate the challenges.

The interactive session provided further insight into COTM technologies. According to one of the panelists, COTM enables commanders to stay connected and command forces in real-time, even while moving using satellite or cellular networks. He added that the technology is crucial for tactical coordination, command and control as well as logistics support.

In his closing remarks, the representative of the Chief of Defence Space Administration, R Adm OA Adeleke emphasized the importance of COTM in Nigeria’s military operations while also charging the hosting Directorate to partner with local institutions for advanced training in COTM technology and in revolutionising the way military operations are coordinated.
