The Directorate of Earth Observation hosted the September 2024 Edition of the Defence Space Administration (DSA) Monthly Lecture Series titled Application of Geospatial Intelligence in Combating Insecurity in Nigeria. This lecture was centered on the use of Geospatial Intelligence in Tackling Insecurity in Nigeria.
Brigadier General AY Mbafung representing the Director of Earth Observation, Air Vice Marshal AA Suleh in his opening remarks, emphasized the essential role that Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) plays in addressing the country’s security challenges. He pointed out that GEOINT is key to tracking insurgent activities and bridging security gaps across Nigeria. Additionally, he noted that integrating real-time surveillance with GEOINT could significantly boost efforts to counter security threats. He concluded by encouraging participants to engage thoroughly with the lecture material, given its direct relevance to their duties.
The session thereafter dovetailed into a comprehensive presentation by Mr Akintaro Ifeoluwa Amos, a Space Science and Technology Officer GradeII from the Host directorate. He provided in-depth insights into the application of Geospatial Intelligence in addressing Nigeria’s security concerns.
The lecture transitioned into an interactive session. This was moderated by Lt Cdr SE Ateru with insights from Dr Olaide Aderoju, a renowned researcher specializing in space applications from NARSDA. Maj AO Kilani from the host directorate, and the presenter, Mr. Akintaro Ifeoluwa Amos.
The lecture concluded with closing remarks from the Deputy Chief of Defence Space Administration (DCDSA), Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo.
The DCDSA offered insightful comments on the topic, emphasizing the importance of collaborations and training. Additionally, he commended the Directorate of Earth Observation for organizing a successful and impactful seminar.
