The Directorate of Navigation, Positioning and Timing (DNPT) has hosted the February edition of the Defence Space Administration (DSA) Monthly Seminar Series, spotlighting innovative strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s Defence Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities through satellite enabled unmanned systems.
The seminar, themed “Optimising Defence Search and Rescue Operations with satellite enabled unmanned Aerial vehicles in Nigeria” brought together military officers, technical experts and stakeholders to examine how space-based technologies can enhance operational effectiveness in time critical missions.
In his opening remarks, the Director of Navigation, Positioning and Timing, Commodore MM Epelle, welcomed participants and underscored the relevance of the topic to contemporary military operations. He noted that in both peace and wartime engagements, timing remains a decisive factor, adding that the DSA is committed to providing critical space based resources to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria in achieving mission success.

The paper was presented by Mr Aliyu Umar Ahmad of the hosting directorate. His presentation provided an indepth evaluation of how Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), when integrated with Satellite Navigation systems, are emerging as key enablers in modern defence SAR operations. The paper highlighted the operational advantages of combining UAV agility with the precision, reliability and real-time capabilities of satellite navigation technology.

The seminar transitioned into an engaging interactive session moderated by Lt(NN) SW Kabowei. The panel featured Group Captain MKO Mokelu of the Office of the Chief of the Air Staff as guest discussant, Engr Inyang Aniekan Abasi from the hosting directorate, and the presenter. Discussions centred on the practical challenges of deploying UAVs in SAR operations, including technical, logistical and coordination considerations. Panelists provided expert insights, addressed participants’ questions and clarified critical issues surrounding implementation.

Delivering the closing remarks, the Chief of Defence Space Administration, Major General PO Ilodibia, commended the presenter for a well-researched and thought provoking paper that stimulated robust dialogue. He advocated for a broader national perspective on the subject and called for strengthened collaboration across Nigeria’s space and emergency response ecosystem, including the National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, National Emergency Management Agency, and the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation.

The seminar concluded with the presentation of a souvenir to the guest speaker, Group Captain MKO Mokelu, followed by a vote of thanks and a group photograph, marking another successful edition of the DSA’s knowledge-sharing series.
