The Directorate of Communication Satellite (DCS) of the Defence Space Administration (DSA) recently hosted the February edition of its monthly lecture series at Gen LEO Irabor Hall. Themed “Implementing Digital Communication Solutions for Enhanced Operational Effectiveness in the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the seminar highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize military communication systems.
A key focus of the event was a PowerPoint presentation on the development of the Armed Forces Communication (AFCOM) Application—an innovative platform designed to facilitate secure communication among troops in the field and at the command level.

In his welcome address, Major General ES Mustapha provided an update on the AFCOM App’s development, noting that it has reached 40% completion. He emphasized that the app will enable encrypted end-to-end communication within the Armed Forces, ensuring the security of sensitive documents across various formats, including visual and audiovisual content. Additionally, he highlighted the app’s role in addressing critical challenges such as fragmented communication systems, security vulnerabilities, and interoperability gaps, all of which hinder efficient decision-making in military operations.

The seminar’s resource person, Mr. Joshua Alawiye, a staff member of the host directorate, delivered an in-depth presentation on the AFCOM App. He outlined its operational framework, design, and key features, which include instant messaging, file uploading and sharing, as well as operational and strategic grouping capabilities.
An interactive session followed, allowing panelists and participants to engage with the speaker, ask questions, and provide feedback to enhance the project’s development.

In his closing remarks, the Deputy Chief of Defence Space Administration (DCDSA), Rear Admiral K. Mohammed, commended the seminar’s theme, the clarity of the presentation, and the active participation of guests and personnel. He reaffirmed the DSA’s commitment to leveraging digital communication solutions to strengthen operational efficiency in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
